levelHead v1.0, 3 cubed speed run

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

levelHead is a spatial memory game by Julian Oliver.

levelHead uses a hand-held solid-plastic cube as its only interface. On-screen it appears each face of the cube contains a little room, each of which are logically connected by doors.

In one of these rooms is a character. By tilting the cube the player directs this character from room to room in an effort to find the exit.

Some doors lead nowhere and will send the character back to the room they started in, a trick designed to challenge the player’s spatial memory. Which doors belong to which rooms?

There are three cubes (levels) in total, each of which are connected by a single door. Players have the goal of moving the character from room to room, cube to cube in an attempt to find the final exit door of all three cubes. If this door is found the character will appear to leave the cube, walk across the table surface and vanish.. The game then begins again”

AIRmikan... Go download it now!

“Airmikan is desktop virtual pets of digital comic [mikan seijin gril], which is based on Adobe AIR. This Airmikan is selfish so you need to look after carefully. It will die or become so big and your computer will be running slow. You need to watch out!”

It’s nice to see that there is a conceptual model with AIR that far out weighs creating the same experience in the browser. They are utilizing a transparent window (multiple actually) that seems to be a key feature in defining this experience.

This is a really cute experience. I had a similar idea for a “digital organism”. That as you hunt for content and consume content the “digital organism” then reflects this as a healthy activity and the end user is rewarded with a healthy “digital organism”.

Magnetic Movie

“The secret lives of invisible magnetic fields are revealed as chaotic ever-changing geometries . All action takes place around NASA’s Space Sciences Laboratories, UC Berkeley, to recordings of space scientists describing their discoveries . Actual VLF audio recordings control the evolution of the fields as they delve into our inaudible surroundings, revealing recurrent ‘whistlers’ produced by fleeting electrons . Are we observing a series of scientific experiments, the universe in flux, or a documentary of a fictional world?

digg labs

Some more data visualization love. These different treatments are worth a look. Heck… Download them as a screensaver(s). Enjoy!

The labs provide a broader (and deeper) view of Digg. A lot of stuff gets submitted to Digg every day, so good things can sometimes fly right past you. Labs projects look beneath the surface of the Digg community’s activities.”

Digg labs projects are the results of collaboration with Digg partner stamen design. They have also released a public API for Digg so that anyone can turn Digg data into their own visualizations.

“No cameras or lights, just data”. I saw this post on the Papervision 3D blog in regards to Radioheads video for “House of Cards”. It’s so inspiring to see how data visualization is playing a role in this video. Take a gander at the viewer here.

Made by Aaron Meyers and Aaron Koblin using a modified version of PV3D.

Learn about how the video was made and the 3D plotting technologies behind it.
